Dr Monica Moore graduated in Medicine in 1983, and is now a GP psychotherapist in private practice. Since 2003 she has been involved in counselling training for GPs and psychologists.
The counselling workshops for GPs arose out of requests from colleagues for focused psychological therapy skills which could be adapted for use in general practice. Dr Moore is in the unique position of being able to combine over 20 years of experience in general practice with expertise in a range of counselling modalities, including CBT, Motivational Interviewing, IPT, ACT and hypnosis.A special interest in personality disorders provides a background to the practical implications for clinicians in managing challenging patient behaviours in the consultation.
Dr Moore understands what is achievable in the normal GP consultation, and provides simple strategies which can decrease the frustrations and improve the outcomes of interactions with challenging patients. Workshops are presented to meet the needs of GPs, with a focus on common issues and time-saving tips, and can be tailored to suit the learning objectives of GPs and GP registrars.
GPs who attended the Motivational Interviewing workshops have commented on their usefulness, as they learn techniques which promote lifestyle change and actually save time, by helping to identify and manage challenging patient personality styles. Those who attended the Cognitive Behaviour Therapy workshops reported still using the techniques for stress-management, anxiety and depression years later.
The interactive workshops include a brief power-point presentation outlining the framework, discussion of participants’ cases and small group exercises. These are designed to increase skill acquisition and development of confidence in the use of the skills in a busy general practice. Pre-reading texts and handouts are provided.
